A Mentoring Resource that Prepares High School Students for the College Application Process

This online college admissions mentoring resource was developed after several years work with 1st GEN students in Santa Ana, CA. 1st GEN students in the top quartile of their class were able to get accepted to and win scholarships from top colleges. 1st GEN students not ranked in the top of their class could still gain admissions to great colleges with a 4-year game plan to graduate without student loans. So we condensed all our college admissions know-how into 50 minute courses - one for top quartile 1st GENs, and another for 1st GENs ranked elsewhere - and we offer these courses to schools and nonprofits on a sliding scale with deep education discounts. We recently added a third online mentoring course, Authentic U, for any high school student. Authentic U's philosophy is to reduce the stress of college admissions and increase the focus on identifying best-fit colleges for each student. We do this by developing resources for students including assements and detailed information on colleges by size, region, affilation, and majors offered. Authentic U also offers a framework for students to pursue a 4-year college degree with little reliance on student loans.

Supporting College Counseling

One of the busiest times of year for any high school counselor is the college application season. Within a three month period counselors are expected to handle case loads of 450 students and provide advice on college selection, major selection, letters of recommendation, essays.....it's hard to imagine how anyone can handle this kind of work-load.

This is where our online mentoring resource can lend a hand. Imagine if each of your students applying to college sat for an hour to hear experts' insider tips on college selection, major selection, how to maximize chances for acceptance to the best colleges, and how to pay for college -- before their first counseling sessions.

For our school and nonprofit partners, the course includes a one-page self-evaluation form that tracks each students' progress in eight important steps of college admissions. Counselors can prompt students to complete the evaluation before the first college counseling session. This will significantly reduce the amount of spade work counselors have to do - potentially saving hundreds of hours of counseling work and allowing counselors to conduct more high-impact guidance on college admissions.
